Literary Devices

1. Metaphor: Describing an object without using like or as
Example: That fish is albino white. (my fish tank)

2. Mood: General tone of a story.
Example: depressing, bright, sad, happy, exciting

3. Plot: Begininng, middle and ending of a story.
Example: In the movie tangled, at the end of the story Rapunzel is reunited with her parents the king and the queen and marries her prince. Everything is a happy ever after.

4. Theme: Main idea of the story.
Example: Friendship, love, horror, death, bravery, courage, mystery, religion

5. Simile: Comparision of two things using like or as.
Example: She laughs like a hyena. -karissa

6. Foreshadowing: When a movie gives a hint that something is going to happen later.
Example: In the show ``That`s So Raven``, Raven would constantly have future visions that would tell you what`s going to happen.

7. Suspense: When a situation gets intense and anxious.
Example: In the movie ``The Hunger Games``, when all the tributes are standing on their plates in the arena. The music becomes louder and the person talking is counting down and you can hear Katniss breathing heavily, and all the tributes looking around scared. This situation makes you anxious and gets very intense.

8. Flashback: When someone sees back to an event that happened and has some sort of a meaning.
Example: In the movie ``The Notebook`` Gena falls in love with James. As she gets older she develops alzheimers and forgets everything she ever had with James. But one night for 10 minutes she has a flashback of everything they did and had. It was very important because she remembered her husband and everything they did.

9. Irony: When something happens that`s the opposite of what we would expect to happen.
Example: Everyday you wear rainboots to school, and the one day you don`t it rains. -Karissa

10. Hyperbole: Exaggeration
Example: My dad will say its 5 pm when really it`s only 4:37 pm. He always exaggerates with the time.
